What is mycorrhizae and how does it benefit crops, plants, and turf?

The mycorrhizal fungi found in VermaPlex form a mutually beneficial, or symbiotic, relationship with vascular plant through the roots.  This ecological activity naturally occurs to some degree in nearly every soil.  In this biological link between the root and soil, the fungus grows into the root and out into the soil and becomes a very important component of soil life and soil chemistry.

Unfortunately, in most soils that have been used for intensive cropping, tilling, or have been subjected to applications of chemical and pesticide laden fertilizers, the population of these natural, beneficial fungi has been considerably diminished and can no longer support and enhance plant growth.  However, when mycorrhizal fungi sufficiently colonize a root system, they form a network that greatly enhances the plant’s uptake of water and nutrients, stimulates growth, improves overall plant  and soil health, and more.  This increase in absorptive capacity also means you significantly enhance the efficiency of your nutrient program, as there is much less runoff and waste.
